Fayol’s listed fourteen principles of management growing out of his experience given below:
1. DIVISION OF WORK: Work should be divided between employees on the basis of their specialization and professionality so that they can produce best possible results.
- AUTHORITY AND RESPONSIBILITY: Authority is a power and responsibility is accountability. He said that every person is responsible for his authority.
- DISCIPLINE: Discipline is “respect for agreements among people” and is essential at all levels for good management.
- UNITY OF COMMAND: This means that employees should receive others from one authority only.
- UNITY OF DIRECTION: Each group of activities with the same objective must have one head and one plan.
- SUBORDINATION OF INDIVIDUAL TO GENERAL INTEREST: General interest should dominate the personal liking and disliking of employees.
- REMUNERATION: Remuneration and methods of payment should be fair and satisfactory to employees.
- CENTRALIZATION: The extent to which authority is concentrated or dispersed should be outlined clearly.
- SCALAR CHAIN: A single manager should not look after entire work himself but he should share his burden by giving authorities to juniors to establish a chain of link called chain of command.
- ORDER: It refers for everything at its place. This is the principle of organization in the arrangement of things and principles.
- EQUITY: Management should handle the employees honestly, fairly and kindly. Only in this way, you can expect loyality, sincerity and devotions from employees.
- STABILITY OF TENURE: The job provided should be of a permanent nature and continuity. It is a temporary job no body will take it seriously.
- INITIATIVE: Manager should “sacrifice personal vanity” in order to permit and encourage subordinates to exercise it. It may help to explore the hidden talent and technical capabilities.
- UNITY IS THE STRENGTH: Let the employees be guided to develop teamwork and team spirits, sense of co-ordination and spirit of joint efforts, in order to achieve goals.
