ROLE OF TANNINS IN PLANT KINGDOM

1. It is only theorized that they act as protective to the plant during certain stages of growth and are finally either destroyed or deposited as end products.
2. It has been theorized that tannins may provide energy to fruits by their oxidation process and fruits in their metabolism utilize this energy.
3. It has also been theorized that they have protective function in plant since they possess antiseptic properties so they prevent damage by insects and fungi.
4. They exert an inhibitory effect on many enzymes due to protein precipitation and they may serve as protective in barks and heartwood.
